ANZ 3020 Human-Animal Relationships Across Global History 3 credits This course offers an interdisciplinary perspective on global histories across Western and Eastern cultures. Students will examine the complex relationships between humans and animals and understand how animals have shaped human history and how humans have shaped animal history. (Prerequisite: ANZ 1326/1326L; Co-requisite: ANZ 1100/1100L). Course Fee ANZ 3030 Animals in Agriculture 3 credits This course dives into the use of animals in the meat, dairy, egg, and wool sections of farming and how those relationships developed. The course will provide practical education on the realities of farm animals, and the recent establishment of farm sanctuaries for former agriculture animals. Course Fee ANZ 3040 Marine Mammal Science and Conservation 3 credits This course dives into marine mammals as a species as well as the various human associations and conservation 3 credits This course introduces students to public policy as it relates to nonhuman animals and our often-contradictory treatment of them. Students will examine the history and influences of animal-related policies utilizing real-world examples of legislation, litigation, regulation, ballot initiatives, and advocacy campaigns. Course Fee ANZ 3060 Primates, People, and Conservation 3 credits This course offers an interdisciplinary exploration of the relationships between humans and our closet evolutionary relatives - primates. Blending insights from primatology, anthrozoology, and conservation science, students will examine the biology, behavior, and ecology of primates while critically analyzing the cultural, ethical, and environmental dynamics shaping human-primate interactions. (Prerequisite: ANZ 1326/1326L; Co-requisite: ANZ 1100/1100L). Course Fee ANZ 3070 Feathers and Scales 3 credits This course explores the interactions humans have with non-mammal species such as birds and reptiles. Students will dive into the complicated reactions humans have towards “less-desirable” pets, human-wildlife conflict, and efforts surrounding this group of animals. Course Fee ANZ 3050 Animals: Public Policy and Advocacy conservation approaches to “unlikeable” species. Course Fee ANZ 3100 Animal Training and Theory of Behavior 3 credits This course will examine the theories guiding contemporary practices in behavioral husbandry. Applications of theory will be examined as it pertains to the development of modern animal training programs. The diversity of enrichment 3 credits This course will focus on the scientific measurement of animal welfare in varying contexts, including research and captivity. Topics will include physiological measurements of animal well-being, quality of life, and basic introduction to the laws regulating animal use. (Prerequisite: ANZ 1100, ANZ 1100L, ANZ 2200, & ANZ 2200L). Course Fee ANZ 3300 Animals in the Public Eye 3 credits This course will dissect human relationships and perceptions of animals as well as animal use through examination of scientific literature and critical thinking. (Prerequisite: ANZ 2100) Course Fee ANZ 3350 Cross-Cultural Anthrozoology 3 credits This course is designed to familiarize students with the diverse roles of, and complex relationships with, animals in various cultures. Thinking critically about the ways societies view human/non-human animal interactions through exposure to the diversity of different ways animals are treated in other cultures around the world. (Prerequisite: ANZ 2100) Course Fee ANZ 3400 Educating About Animals 3 credits Students will examine the various techniques and theories associated with educating others about non-human animals. Topics include empathy development, conservation messaging, environmental interpretation, lesson planning, and an overview of modern pedagogy. (Prerequisite: ANZ 1100 & ANZ 1100L).
