Conduct Philosophy
We value a student-first approach to conduct matters; we prefer to engage students in educational dialogue about personal and community responsibility, consequences for actions, and civility. We believe students in college are adults and should be treated as such; as an adult, there are consequences to actions. We believe that student behavior is an opportunity to develop responsible citizens and help students learn about themselves, their choices, and how their actions may impact a community. This is an educational and developmental process and allows us to engage students and have meaningful conversations with them. Based on our philosophy described above, conduct meetings are most effective conducted in 1-on-1 setting. For policy violations which may result in college suspension or expulsion, students will have the opportunity to meet with the Student Conduct Committee in lieu of a 1-on-1 meeting. We focus on addressing and correcting behavior, not judging the individual. We do not look for conduct violations and we do not attempt to “catch people” in order to confront them. However, we do not ignore issues and we aim for behavior modification and education by holding students accountable for their behavior. We believe education is the key to prevention and reducing recidivism. We use “more likely than not” as our evidentiary standard of responsibility (51%).
Jurisdiction and Authority
The Student Code of Conduct outlines the policies and procedures governing the College, its properties, activities, and departments. The Associate Dean, or their designee, is responsible for enforcing these rules.
