GENERAL EDUCATION The General Education curriculum provides a foundation of basic competencies for all degree programs. General Education courses contribute to the total development and educational growth of the student. These courses are required by the Florida Department of Education and the regional accrediting body. General Education Core Competencies Writing : Students demonstrate the ability to craft a multiple page essay that focuses on a single assertion that is supported by well-chosen subordinate premises and credibly sourced outside references. Computer Literacy : Students demonstrate concepts and operations that relate to common computer usage. The competencies met comprise of working independently with a computer, ability to maintain a computer, acclimating to updated technologies, organizing information, and trouble shooting basic hardware and software problems. Quantitative Reasoning: Students demonstrate the ability to use inductive and deductive reasoning to solve real-world problems through the application of fundamental mathematical operations. Scientific Reasoning: Students demonstrate the ability to objectively evaluate claims to reach a logical conclusion through the examination of empirical evidence and unbiased sources of information. Critical Thinking: Students demonstrate the ability to discriminate among degrees of truth or falsity of inferences drawn from their evaluation of available information in order to form a judgement. Oral Communication: Students demonstrate the ability to effectively transfer organized information verbally to an intended audience. Self-Awareness and Awareness of Others: Students demonstrate the ability to self-regulate by knowing what they are feeling as they feel it and being able to take the perspective of others to address the feelings of others. Creativity: Students demonstrate the ability to discover new opportunities or solutions that consider diverse resources, look beyond current practices and utilize innovative thinking.
