A VIRTUAL COLLEGE SEARCH AND TRANSITION PROGRAM FOR HIGH SCHOOL JUNIORS WHO LEARN DIFFERENTLY AND THEIR FAMILIES

A PROGRAM OF BEACON COLLEGE

Navigator PREP Jr. is a highly personalized, six-month virtual program designed to help college-bound high school juniors who learn differently to confidently begin their college search and prepare for the transition to college.

Navigator PREP Jr.’s transition counselors help students to: • Learn about the realities of college , including accessing accommodations and resources • Increase self-awareness of what is required for college success • Develop executive functioning skills by researching colleges, organizing information and evaluating their “best fit” options • Establish advocacy action steps essential for a smooth transition to college • Develop a clear plan to begin the college application process Students receive individualized and group-based instruction to develop a deeper understanding of the skills required to succeed in life after high school while determining an appropriate college environment based on their learning profile. This program is open to any college-bound high school junior who learns differently. Program Highlights • Engages each student, parents and a select teacher in completing the College Independence Scale — our Transition Center’s own multi-perspective pre-program assessment tool for college readiness. • Focuses on developing academic, social, emotional regulation, self-awareness, independent living and executive functioning skills through personalized coaching. • Combines videoconferencing, webinars, newsletters and reports, including three live virtual sessions per month and an instructional webinar focused on key topics related to the transition to college. • Delivers a summary report from the Beacon College Transition Center detailing specific recommendations for the student’s final year of high school and key considerations when evaluating colleges.

PARTNERING WITH PARENTS Parents play an integral role in the college search and transition process. Our Navigator PREP Jr. transition team works with parents to: • Identify and support specific concerns about their child’s college readiness • Share best practices on preparing for the challenges of college independence • Define the significant differences between high school and college • Create a transition plan to proactively prepare for college during junior and senior year

About the Program Navigator PREP Jr. is an extension of Navigator PREP — the country’s first virtual college transition program for high school seniors who learn differently. Navigator PREP Jr. aims to begin this preparation process even earlier — during the student’s junior year of high school — when self-driven executive functioning skills are critical to the college search and evaluation process. The 2021 cost to participate in Navigator PREP Jr. is $1,500.
