Compass programming was canceled. Rather than accept this situation as a “loss,” Herold and her team pivoted to a three-week pre-college program offered primarily for “rising” U.S. high school juniors and seniors and broadly based on the Compass model. Thus, in July 2016, Beacon introduced its now signature “Summer for Success” program, which has exceeded enrollment cap targets annually since its inception (35 high school participants) to its most recent (2019) enrollment of 72 pre-collegians. Nigeria In June 2015, President Hagerty was invited to be a keynote speaker at the First International Conference on Disabilities for Sub-Saharan Africa, convened in Lagos, Nigeria, and attended by more than 800 individuals. He and Dr. Oksana Hagerty also conducted a series of conference workshops for professionals, parents, and non-governmental organization (NGO) advocates, as well as participated in school visits in Lagos and surrounding areas. Their introduction of Beacon’s model and its influence on students with learning and attention issues has led to early collaboration with a Nigerian foundation and representatives of the University of Lagos in which members of Beacon’s faculty and staff will provide workshops for teachers and nontraditional students in summer 2020. Nigerian officials also seek Beacon’s help developing a curriculum to train educators and support personnel in best practices for working with K-12 and university-age nontraditional students.
