“Instead of looking for the Easter bunny and all the eggs that it would hide, I figured it would be more fun to look for ducks,” – Heather Reed
Beacon Traditions THE DUCK HUNT
With Easter around the corner in 2014, senior Heather Reed hatched an idea that she believed her Beacon peers would think was just ducky. The web and digital media major recently had visited another college and spotted a huge duck replica squatting in the middle of campus. That was the school’s signal for the start of its annual duck hunt — its whimsical way of helping students de-stress during finals. “I really liked the idea,” Reed said. And she knew her fellow Beacon students also would take to the hunt like ducks to water. She shared the idea with the Beacon Student Activities Council. Her peers also loved the notion.
Soon, an idea took flight: rather than stage for Easter an egg hunt why not instead swap in ducks. “Instead of looking for the Easter bunny and all the eggs that it would hide, I figured it would be more fun to look for ducks,” Reed said. She ordered a badling of rubber duckies from Amazon and hid about 200 all over campus. With apologies to Elmer Fudd, Beacon College duck season officially was open. At stake: gift cards and the coveted title of “Best Duck Hunter.” Even with the spoils in play, teamwork often won out. Students sometimes formed teams to hunt for their floatable quarry.
